Meraki Subscription Licensing

Subscription Licensing provides customers with a simple, flexible way to consume and manage Meraki solutions. Subscription licensing is available for new and renewing customers globally except in Brazil, India, Russia, Belarus, and China. This overview article aims to introduce the concept of Subscription Licensing and highlight its key features and benefits.

Key Features

  • More flexibility
  • Easier scaling
  • Simplified ordering and renewal process
  • Ability to purchase licenses on a month-to-month basis

Flexible Terms

Customers can choose their licensing terms from 12 months up to 84 months, including customer determined start and end dates. This allows them to align their licensing needs with their network growth and planning strategies.
With subscription licensing, organizations have the option to purchase licenses for individual devices or groups of devices, with licenses being valid for a set period. Customers can renew their licenses at any time, providing greater flexibility to add or remove devices and adjust licensing costs as needed.
Additionally, subscription licensing simplifies network scaling. As an organization’s network expands, they can easily add more licenses without the need to invest in new hardware, saving both time and money.

What is a Cisco Networking Subscription?

A Cisco Networking Subscription is a group of licenses that are bound to the same term.

How do license terms and end dates work?

You get to pick the subscription duration that suits your organization best—anywhere from 12 months to 84 months! It’s all about making it easy for you to sync up your licensing with your network growth and future plans.

What if I don’t want the same end date for each of my locations?

Every subscription has its own end date, and you can have as many as you need! Once you claim your subscriptions in the dashboard, just bind your networks to the right ones. It’s really that simple.

When does a subscription start?

When you purchase a subscription, you can pick the start date too. Choose any date between 7 and 90 days from your purchase. Flexibility at its finest!

How do I make sure my subscription has licenses for my devices?

Just follow these two simple rules:

  • Licensing follows a 1:1 device-to-license policy. So, if you have six access points, you’ll need six licenses.
  • Choose license SKUs that map to your hardware models. Subscription license SKUs are hardware agnostic, meaning one SKU can cover multiple devices within the same model family. The SKUs vary by product, but don’t worry, it’s easy to find the right ones. Just check out the Subscription Licensing SKUs documentation to figure out which license SKUs you’ll need.
How do feature tiers work?

There are, at most, two feature tiers for each product: Essentials and Advantage. Some products only have an Essentials tier. The best part is, you can mix and match feature tiers within the same network based on your needs.

You enable these tiers at the product-family level in each network. So, if you have two networks and only need the Advantage tier for your security appliance in one of them, go for it! No need to update your entire organization—just pay for what you need.

How do I use the subscription after I purchase it?

When you purchase a subscription, you’ll get a claim key to enter in the dashboard. Once you’ve claimed it, you can choose which networks to bind to the subscription. When a network is bound, all its devices will be licensed and compliant!

Want more details? Check out our Network Binding documentation.

Can I make changes to my subscription after I've purchased it?

Absolutely! With a Cisco Networking Subscription, you have the flexibility to tweak your subscription even after purchase. Just contact us to submit a change request. Once it’s processed, all changes will show up in the Meraki dashboard—no need to claim any new keys.

Check out our Subscription Changes documentation to learn more.

What happens if I forget to renew my subscription?

Don’t stress! We’ll send you several reminders before you reach that point. But if it does happen, you’ll get a 30-day grace period. After that, you’ll lose management access to your devices, but they’ll keep passing traffic. Once your subscription is back in compliance, you’ll regain full management access to your networks. We’ve got your back!

What happens if I add more devices and forget to add licenses?

You’ll get a 30-day grace period, and after that, only the out-of-compliance devices will enter a disabled management state. No need to worry—they’ll still keep passing traffic, giving you flexibility in managing your device inventory.

If you still have questions, our Subscriptions Compliance documentation has the answers.

What are unified licenses and unified hardware?

A unified license is a single license per device that allows it to be managed on-premises, in the cloud, or in a hybrid deployment. It enables users to freely change the management mode of a device at any time during its deployment. With the launch of Cisco Wi-Fi 7 access points, we are introducing unified licensing for wireless: Cisco Wireless Essentials and Advantage.

Unified hardware is the next-generation of Cisco Networking products that provides flexibility for you to manage your network on-premises or in the cloud, with no product ID (PID) variations based on management mode. We’re launching our first truly unified hardware products starting with the new Wi-Fi 7 access points: Cisco Wireless 9170 series.

What is the difference between a Cisco Networking Subscription and a Cisco Meraki Subscription?

Meraki Subscription licensing is a licensing model that will evolve to become Cisco Networking Subscription. Cisco Networking Subscription will support both Cisco Meraki subscription licenses as well as unified licenses. If you purchase a new subscription, it will be a Cisco Networking Subscription. If a unified license is added to an existing Cisco Meraki Subscription, it will automatically upgrade it to a Cisco Networking Subscription while continuing to maintain your original subscription reference ID, end date, and existing licensed features.
